The Valley of the Mills

The Valley of the Mills, one of the five valleys that once crossed the Sorrento Peninsula, today represents the best-preserved part of this natural system, which once extended as far as Marina Piccola and connected to other valleys that have largely disappeared under roads and buildings. The valley takes its name from the mill located at its floor, next to a sawmill powered by water from the surrounding springs and streams, whose remains can still be seen today covered by vegetation.

Here, water coming from the hills and springs flowed into a series of wells dug into grottoes, providing water to the population of Sorrento. The sawmill sold precious woods such as cherry, olive, and walnut to local artisans, who created objects of great value and beauty, an activity renowned worldwide. With the construction of Piazza Tasso in 1866, the mills were isolated from the sea, and the new microclimate favored the spontaneous growth of rare flora, including Phyllitis vulgaris, a magnificent fern that still characterizes the valley today.
